Kilcona’s Winter Warriors

Posted by / in Information /

March 4, 2014…Hell may indeed have frozen over!

The first day of spring is less than three weeks away, but for many Winnipeggers, it can’t come soon enough. This is Winnipeg’s coldest winter in thirty-five years.

These days, with wind chill values well inside in the danger zone, dogs and dog owners are the only ones enjoying Kilcona Park.  Outside the off-leash area, the only thing moving is an occasional park patrol vehicle.

On Friday another surge of Arctic air moved in to Winnipeg, bringing winds of 40 kilometers an hour with gusts to 60. Blowing snow created zero visibility white-out conditions.

On Saturday wind chill values dropped to a record minus 50C. On one of the worst weekends ever, heroic dog parkers and their furry friends, undaunted by the extreme weather, bundled up beyond recognition to hike Kilcona’s pond trails.

Our masked winter warrior – KPDC’s Director of Events, Cindy Greenlay – layered up and braved  Saturday’s bone chilling temperatures to take Cade to the park. A Husky cross from northern Manitoba, Cade is a true snow dog. Says Cindy, “Cade was so happy running around. He truly does make winter more tolerable!!”

Cade and Cindy love winter and the fun-filled opportunities the season presents. As a recreational therapist, Cindy knows the importance of being active throughout the year.  KPDC’s new Director of Events is already planning Kilcona’s first Winter Dog Fest with kick-sledding and skijoring events. Stay tuned!

If you have inspiring extreme winter weather photos at Kilcona, why not share them! Post them on KPDC’s Facebook page.

Kelmar is a family-owned and operated meat and deli shop, with their own  in-house butcher, sausage maker and smokehouse.

The store has deep roots on the family farm near Brandon where Kelmar’s owner, Kelly Penner was raised. The Penner family grew grain and raised beef and dairy cattle, hogs and chickens. Later Kelly and his wife MaryAnn bought the family homestead and raised their children.

Kelly says, “Farming is our life. Caring about the land and the livestock we raised was always number one.” In 2012 the Penners brought their farming experience to Winnipeg, opening a custom meat shop on Lagimodiere.

The following year the Penners opened a “from scratch” bakery next door to the meat shop.  Along with fresh breads, the bakery serves up cakes, pastries and homemade pizza to go.

The Penners are strong advocates for the “Buy Local – Support Manitoba Producers” movement and sustainable food production. “Most of our meat is local or sourced from the region,” says Kelly. Their premium Certified Angus Beef – a cut above Canadian AAA and AA grades – is from Western Canada.

Kelmar sells beef and bison raised in Manitoba on family farms without the use of hormones. The animals are grass fed and finished on a grain ration to ensure the highest quality flavour. They also sell lamb from MJ Millar Ranch near Lundar. The lambs are raised without growth hormones or antibiotics.

What makes Kelmar stand out from the rest of the pack is the exceptional quality of their meat and outstanding customer service.  “We have a one-on-one relationship with the customer”, says MartAnn We want people to come and say, ‘This is my butcher – or my baker’”. You can drop in and get exactly the cut you want because the butcher will custom cut to your order.

Kelmar also custom processes wild game, custom crafts a wide variety of sausages, and arranges delicious party and nibbler platters. For a special treat try their smoked lamb, chicken and turkey.

KPDC Proposes Water Features for Kilcona Dog Park

Posted by / in Information /

beneful-dog-park_0

On Tuesday KPDC’s Board will ask EKT Community Committee Councillors Jeff Browaty (North Kildonan), Russ Wyatt (Transcona) and Thomas Steen (East Kildonan) to support the club’s proposal to develop three seasonal water features in Kilcona Dog Park. KPDC members voted to proceed with the project at the club’s Annual General Meeting in November. Public response to the proposal has been positive.

The first phase of the project will see the installation of a potable water drinking fountain for the shared use of people and dogs. A dog wash/shower station and a dog splash pad will be installed in phases two and three. For safety of dogs and people, the splash pad will be fenced and owners will be required to accompany their pets into the enclosure. It will be accessed with a key card that users purchase and key card fees will be used to finance ongoing operation and maintenance of the facility.

While dog splash pads are common in the United States, Kilcona’s will be the first one in Canada. If the EKT Community Committee supports the project, the Board will begin fundraising this year.

Over the past decade, Kilcona dog owners have identified a need for a safe supply of cold, fresh drinking water for themselves and their pets. Recently, dog owners and veterinarians in Kilcona’s catchment area have confirmed that dogs that have been exposed to Kilcona pond water – either by swimming in it or drinking it – are presenting at clinics with gastrointestinal, urinary tract and skin diseases, and water-borne parasites. The splash pad is designed to address the needs of water-loving dogs and provide them with a safe, healthy alternative to swimming in Kilcona’s retention ponds. It is an accessible recreation activity well-suited to disabled dog owners.

Attractive dog splash pad kits are commercially available. While much more modest in scale than children’s splash pads, the proposed splash pad will be a creative, visually interesting focal point, balancing sport and recreation focal points planned for other locations in the park. It is an appropriate complement to the recreation area and will enhance the visitor experience and it’s an accessible recreation activity well-suited to disabled dog owners.
