KPDC Board Asks For Your Help in Securing Future of Dog Park

KPDC’s Board of Directors offers its thanks to the great volunteers and Kilcona park staff who came out on Saturday with picks, shovels, pails and bags to do what no one wants to spend their weekend doing – picking up other people’s dog poop!

A biting wind created bone-chilling conditions that made the job even more unpleasant. On behalf of the thousands of dog owners who use the park on a regular basis, Poo Crew volunteers picked up hundreds of bags of unclaimed dog poop. We assure you – this was not a pleasant task.

Filthy conditions in both the off-leash and on-leash areas prompted this weekend’s clean-up. It’s the first time a winter park clean-up has been necessary. Use of the off-leash area has increased dramatically and some dog owners are still refusing to pick up. Others are simply not keeping an eye on their dogs.

KPDC members have identified the growing amount of unclaimed dog poop as the number one issue in the park. It’s an ongoing concern for other groups who share the park, and for the City administration.

The Board warns that the unsanitary conditions that made the clean-up necessary is a cause for concern for all dog owners who use the park. If we continue to ignore the problem of irresponsible dog owners who refuse to pick up, there could be serious consequences for the future of Kilcona’s off-leash area.

Irresponsible dog owners have seriously damaged our reputation and credibility as a park user group.

The City is in the process of developing a new management plan for Kilcona and current uses are not “etched in stone”. The plan is designed to set the direction for the park for the next ten to twenty years. Many groups are competing for limited space and there will be changes.

The City has the authority to close down an off-leash area where there is a consistent violation of the requirement to pick up feces. Let’s not provide them with a reason to do that.

Do your part to protect the off-leash area for future generations. Help make Kilcona the cleanest dog park in Winnipeg. Join KPDC’s Number Two Clue Crew – bring a whistle to the park and blow it to alert distracted or irresponsible dog owners that they need to pick up. Be part of KPDC’s Second Bag Program – bring extra bags and offer them to those in need. Use one of them to pick up an extra pile each time you visit the park.

Your park is much cleaner. Let’s keep it that way!

First Park Clean-Up of the Year

Posted by / in Events /

Join the KPDC Poo Crew for Our First Park Clean-Up of the Year

The recent Winnipeg Network of Dog Owner Groups survey indicated that KPDC members’ number one concern is the accumulation of feces in the park.  Dog feces transmit diseases and parasites.

In response to requests from many of you, Kilcona Park Dog Club Board is increasing the number of park clean-up events to address the problem.

KPDC will be holding the first park clean-up of the year next Saturday, March 2, from 1 to 3pm.

The clean-up will focus on the worst areas – around the parking lot, the dog play area and baseball field, and along the north/south service road from the parking lot to the north ponds.

The annual spring clean-up, which covers the entire park is still two months away but the heavy accumulation of feces in high traffic areas warrants extra attention now, before the snow melts.

Winnipeg has already seen 50 per cent more snow fall this winter than last, 10 centimetres more than we normally sees in a winter season, and more is on the way. The extra layers of snow, with their hidden layers of “buried treasure” will be a dangerously unpleasant concern when temperatures begin to rise.

The spring thaw always makes for muddy trails, but muddy, poopy trails create a serious health risk when our dogs clean their own feet.

Please bring shovels or hand tools and grocery bags. We have rubber gloves for volunteers who want them. Kilcona Park staff have donated large collector garbage bags and will be on hand to transport them to the waste depot.

Help make Kilcona the cleanest, safest dog park in Winnipeg. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Director of Events, Wayne L’Esperance, at events@kilconaparkdogclub.ca.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Are you 18 or over and passionate about improving Kilcona Dog Park?

Kilcona Park Dog Club is looking for enthusiastic, outgoing volunteers to assist in selling tickets for our 2013 “People on the Go” Raffle. The raffle is a major fund raiser for Kilcona Park Dog Club; the club’s goal is to raise $4500.

Proceeds from the raffle will be directed to a variety of improvements that dog owners have requested for the off-leash area.

The priorities are additional picnic tables – both standard and wheel-chair accessible designs; more trees – particularly spruce and pine – to create windbreaks; and additional benches at scenic spots along the trails.

KPDC will not be able to fund any improvements to the off-leash area without the raffle and we can’t run the raffle without lots of volunteers. So…we’re asking for your help.

The commitment is minimal – one 2 to 4 hour shift every six weeks from January to May, 2013.

Our sponsors have donated prizes for the “People on the Go” raffle that will have a broad appeal to busy folks, whether they’re dog owners or not, so we´ll be selling tickets at neighbourhood grocery stores like Sobey’s and Safeway. Volunteers will be working in pairs and we’ll be happy to accommodate your schedule.

The draw for prizes – restaurant gift cards, and free yard work, car maintenance and housecleaning services – will be made at KPDC’s Annual BBQ in May 2013.

Interested volunteers, please contact Susan Argue at vicepresident@kilconaparkdogclub.ca.
