Blood Donor Found, Buddy’s Okay –

Thanks KPDC!

Kilcona Park Dog Club received (2:30 pm Nov 17, 2012) the following urgent request.

Hello Kilcona Park Dog Club,

I am putting out a desperate call for NEGATIVE canine blood this weekend!! My little dog, Buddy, is in dire and immediate need of a blood transfusion!! He is type NEGATIVE blood, and I am searching frantically for a canine donor. Red River’s Canine Blood Clinic is closed this weekend, and does not reopen until Monday, at which point it will, in all likelihood, be too late, and my dog will have died. I am being pro-active and trying to save my little guy’s life. Could you please put out an immediate request to your membership at large asking if there is somebody with a canine over 50 lbs. and between the age of 1-8 years who can contact the Machray Animal Hospital and/or Pembina Animal Hospital today (Sat. Nov. 17) AND bring their dog down to PEMBINA ANIMAL HOSPITAL so it get get tested for blood type so that my dog can receive his transfusion. It is a matter of life and death.

Beware of Dog

Posted by / in Information /

UPDATE: Nov 20, 2012

The Board of Directors would like to thank Kilcona Park Dog Club members and many others in Kilcona’s dog park community who stepped forward to provide important information that finally lead to the identification of Tank’s owner. Tank, as most of you are aware, is the dog that mauled Emma at the park on October 25th.

Tank’s owner’s identity has been reported to Winnipeg Animal Services Agency and Tank has not been seen at Kilcona for the past four weeks.

The Board received the following email from Emma’s mom.

“We can’t thank you enough for your assistance, as we would not have been able to find him without your help. Can you please post the following on the Kilcona Dog Park web page?

“Thank you from Emma and her family for all of your concern and good wishes. Emma is recovering well and has even had a few outings to the dog park, where she has enjoyed playing with her friends!  We are pleased to report she has not shown any adverse effects to the incident and gets excited when we mention the words “puppy park”. We are very grateful for the support and assistance of the Kilcona Dog Park community.”

Thanks again for your help with this.”

On October 25 a serious mauling occurred in Kilcona’s off-leash area. A male bull mastiff named Tank attacked and injured a small border collie/lab cross named Emma. Tank is a beige/ fawn mastiff. He was accompanied by his owner and a brindle mastiff.

The attack was unprovoked and came without warning. The victim’s wounds were very deep. It took Emma’s owners half an hour to stop the bleeding. Focused on saving her life, Emma’s family neglected ask Tank’s owner for his contact information.

Emma required surgery. Two weeks later, she’s recovering but it will be another two weeks before the staples can be removed. The vet bill was $1,000.

Tank’s owner admitted to Emma’s owner that his dog is very aggressive with other dogs. The owner brings Tank to Kilcona regularly but normally keeps him on leash. That night, thinking he was alone, he allowed his dog to run loose.

It is against the law to take knowingly aggressive dogs to Winnipeg’s off leash parks and Emma’s owners have reported the incident to Winnipeg Animal Services Agency.

The Board of Kilcona Park Dog Club is asking for your assistance in keeping the park safe for everyone. If you see a dog matching Tank’s description at the park, please protect your own dog(s) – give Tank a very wide berth. If you have any information about this dog, please email – president@kilconaparkdogclub.ca.

Pet-iquette Brochure Released!

NEWS! COUNCILLORS JEFF BROWATY AND THOMAS STEEN HELP FUND INITIATIVE TO UNLEASH GOOD MANNERS

Winnipeg’s dog park organizations announce a new initiative to make the city’s off-leash areas safer and more enjoyable.

In response to complaints about human and animal misbehaviour in Kilcona, Little Mountain and Maple Grove off-leash areas, the city’s dog park associations have joined forces, collaborating to publish a new pet etiquette and safety brochure. The initiative is designed to promote good behavior, reduce conflict, and provide safe off-leash environments for dogs and people.

“Pet-iquette” promotes responsible dog ownership and respectful park stewardship. According to Maple Grove Dog Owners Association’s Rosylyn Jones-Smith, “Winnipeg’s twelve off-leash areas are great places…if everyone obeys the rules, and exercises courtesy and common sense. However one irresponsible person can ruin it for everyone.”

Jones-Smith points out, “Most new dog owners have no idea what to expect the first time they visit a dog park. They need to know about health and safety issues; licenses, vaccinations, what to bring – and what not to bring to the park. The new brochure will also help people choose a dog park that is best suited to their pet.”

While serious injuries in off-leash areas are rare, posts like the following one on the Kilcona Dog Park Winnipeg FaceBook page indicate that they’re not unknown.

“To the lady at the dog park tonight: I’m sorry I used foul language. I…admit that my dog was 50% responsible for the scuff that they got into. But I am still stunned that you did not leash your dog, did not attempt to control it, and then stood there telling me my dog wasn’t hurt as three of us tried to stop the bleeding…

The tussle was ‘just one of those things’ that dogs do…but at the end of the day your dog bit mine, drawing blood. I hope for his sake that you learn to control him better. I’d hate to see such a beautiful dog put down for behaviour the owner refused to acknowledge or control.”

“Pet-iquette” was funded in part by a City of Winnipeg Per Capita Grant and approved by Winnipeg Animal Services Agency.

The brochure will be widely distributed through veterinary clinics, and the city’s animal shelters and rescues. An electronic version of the brochure is available on the clubs’ websites. Our brochure can be accessed in the Pet-iquette page or click on this link: Pet-iquette Brochure

Notice of Motion to Increase Membership Fee for 2013-2014 year

Posted by / in Events, Information /

Notice of Motion to Increase Membership Fee Starting in the 2013-2014 Year

In accordance with the By-Laws of Kilcona Park Dog Club Inc, the Board of Directors provides Notice of Motion to increase the club membership fee to $10.00. The proposed increase will take effect for the November 1, 2013 – October 31, 2014 membership year.

A discussion and vote on the motion to increase the membership fee will to take place at the club’s Annual General Meeting on Monday, November 19, 2011 at 7pm at Kilcona Park Alliance Church, 1977 Norris Rd, Winnipeg MB, next to the dog park.

The Board of Directors endorsed the fee increase on October 12, 2013 and asks the members to support the motion for the following reasons:

1.    Financial Sustainability

To ensure that KPDC has sufficient funds to operate and carry out the goals and objectives of the organization, the club either needs to raise additional money, reduce expenses or hold off on funding park improvements.

KPDC’s membership fee has not been raised since the club was first established in 2004. Over the past 8 years inflation has significantly eroded the Canadian dollar and the $5 membership fee buys about 25% less than it did in 2003. Inflation will continue to erode the club’s purchasing power.

KPDC must maintain a contingency fund that includes a carryover from one Board to the next. The fund must be sufficient to cover the club’s recurring operating expenses, which include but are not limited to: domain registration and web hosting fees, post box rental, park fees and supplies for club events, Volunteer Board Development Training for current and future Boards, and Directors Liability insurance.

(Please note: This year the Board voted not to purchase Director Liability insurance because it would have depleted the club’s bank account. The decision to forego liability insurance creates a serious risk because, without it, individual Directors may be sued for actions they take while carrying out their duties on behalf of the membership.)

KPDC has begin funding special projects. These projects are discretionary; they can only proceed if the balance in the contingency fund is sufficient to cover foreseeable operating expenses, and the club has raised enough money – through sponsorship, events, gaming and grants – to fund them.

This year the Board has been successful in its fundraising efforts – so successful in fact  that Corporate Sponsors contribute more to the club’s bottom line than club members do through membership fees. However there is no sure thing – no sponsorship or grant can be counted on and there are no guarantees that events and gaming revenues will generate enough revenue to cover ongoing operating expenses. Furthermore, there are no guarantees that future Boards will be willing to continue to do the lion’s share of fundraising.

2.    Membership Card Processing and Handling Expenses

For the past 8 years, KPDC has been reliant on selling club memberships at the park. There were no benefits to membership that required a membership card.

However, with the introduction of the Corporate Sponsorship Program last spring, members began receiving significant financial benefits and KPDC needed to introduce membership cards and find a way to get cards out quickly and conveniently.

PetValu’s offer to sell, print and laminate cards and maintain a current membership database at the Reenders and Rivergrove locations has been very effective. In return,  KPDC pays Pet Valu 20% of every membership sold to cover staff time, processing and handling; the club only receives $4.00 of each membership sold.

At the request of many of Kilcona’s dog owners, the Board has also explored using PayPal to process memberships. The technology offers people the convenience and flexibility of purchasing their memberships online but will also increase the cost of selling those memberships.

3.    Value-Added Membership

The Corporate Sponsorship Program, introduced in April 2012, brought additional value to club membership, and membership has risen dramatically in the past 6 months.

Through discounts at sponsors and club events, many of our members have recovered their 2012 membership fee several times over – essentially paying no membership fee at all and even making a profit.

The Sponsorship Program will continue to grow and  the benefits will continue to increase, as will the value. It is reasonable that members pay a higher membership fee for a card with benefits than a card without benefits.

Many of our members – new and old – have indicated that the current membership fee is ridiculously low. The Board agrees.

The proposed $5 fee increase will afford KPDC greater financial stability. The proposed fee remains affordable, while reflecting the added value that the new Corporate Sponsorship Program offers members, and bringing the financial contribution of members more in line with the financial contributions of Corporate Sponsors.
